Monday MMA Musings

Mixed Martial Arts is a continuous revolving door of news, fight announcements and fuckery. "Monday MMA Musings" will bring short thoughts on all of the worthwhile happenings in MMA every single Monday. Let's get this shit started, eh.

The Fights

UFC 268 - UFC Welterweight Championship - Kamaru Usman versus Colby Covington 2 - The 1st fight was thrilling, the 2nd fight should be as well. There's a wonderful story line that MMA fans can get behind and might change their mind if they're not already sold on the 2nd fight. Both the champion, Usman, and challenger, Covington, are ultimate competitors, so the fight should be fantastic. Let's just hope they take it to the ground this time around so we can see who the better wrestler is. PLEASE!

UFC 268 - Justin Gaethje versus Michael Chandler - This is an absolute banger of a fight. There is no doubt that someone will be finished. The question is; who will be the one to hit the mat to take a nap? One has to think the winner will be fighting for the title after this matchup and deservedly so. One note about this fight is that it will be former champion versus former champion; WSOF (Gaethje) and Bellator (Chandler), fighting each other in the premier MMA promotion, likely for a shot at the title next.

Bellator 266 - Bellator Light Heavyweight Championship - Vadim Nemkov versus Anthony "Rumble" Johnson and Ryan Bader versus Corey Anderson - Bellator's Light Heavyweight Tournament is closing in on the finale, but first are the semifinals, and they are an absolute *chefs kiss*.

Light Heavyweight champion and MMA great Fedor Emelianenko disciple, Vadim Nemkov is one of the Pound-for-Pound best in the world in the division and his opponent, Rumble Johnson, is a hard hitter, with one punch power that sends his victims to Valhalla. What a fantastic fight this will be.

Former Bellator Light Heavyweight champion and current Heavyweight champion Ryan Bader is still one of the best in the world and is on a mission to regain the Light Heavyweight title. While Bader's opponent, Corey Anderson, is just 1 fight away from fighting for a title in what would be his 4th fight in Bellator, if he beats Ryan Bader. Just like the other semifinal, this is a phenomenal fight that will likely see a finish of some sort.

UFC 266 - Ricky Simón versus Timur Valiev - A Bantamweight banger that will not be talked about as much as it should be because it takes place on a crazy stacked card (UFC 266), but deserves to be watched by fight fans worldwide. There is no doubt these guys won't go into the fight thinking finish, and it would be surprising if once it's all said and done, Simón-Valiev isn't one of the best fights on a great card.

The Fuckery

Amanda Nunes versus Julianna Pena postponed - COVID takes away another fight, and this time the best female fighter ever. Hopefully Amanda Nunes is healthy and recovers quickly from this virus that just isn't going away.

MMA Judging - They suck and something needs to be done before a major fight is ruined by some imbeciles that don't understand what they're watching. Combat sports commissions need to get their shit together and hire people with actual knowledge of MMA and get rid of these hacks being employed now.

MMA Legend Chuck Liddell teases a return to fighting - No one wants to see this. Especially not in a Bareknuckle Boxing fight. Not at 51. The fuckery needs to end.

Cody Garbrandt possibly getting a Flyweight title fight - The fact that I had to even write that sentence is wack. Garbrandt is 1-4 in his last 5 fights and has never even fought at Flyweight. If Cody Garbrandt fights Brandon Moreno for the Flyweight title it would be an absolute travesty, and UFC matchmaking fuckery would be at its peek.

Jiu-Jitsu isn't an Olympic sport - If breakdancing and surfing can be an Olympic sport so to should Jiu-Jitsu. It's a sport that is practiced world wide and continues to grow. There are Jiu-Jitsu gyms every where now. The sport is hot, the athletes are amazing, and the competition is phenomenal. Jiu-Jitsu deserves to be an Olympic sport sooner rather than later.

The News

ONE Championship's Empower event is back on - After being delayed due to COVID, ONE Championship's all female card will now go down on September 3rd. The event was originally intended to take place on May 28th. The event with an Atomweight Grand Prix and a fantastic Strawweight title fight will finally go down and fans should be absolutely hype for it.

Leon Edwards Tweets Jorge Masvidal that he will be ready in November or December - This is just one of those fight that makes so much sense it will probably never happen. There's a storyline with bad blood, there's shit talking between the 2, both fighters are ranked in the Welterweight top 10, and the fight is one fans would get behind. Leon Edwards versus Jorge Masvidal is a fight that is super intriguing, but until they are face-to-face in the Octagon it's hard to believe it will actually happen. But if it does - take my money!!!

Tatiana Suarez sustains knee injury and will have surgery - This makes me so incredibly sad. I feel for Tatiana Suarez. She's had an incredible MMA story with so many ups-and-downs that you can't help but empathize. When Suarez is fighting, it's easy to see that she has all the makings to be great. Her health just keeps getting in the way of MMA greatness. Hopefully, like she has before, Tatiana Suarez can bounce back. If anyone can, it's Tatiana Suarez.

Mark Hunt is supposed to fight again - In MMA? Or Bareknuckle Boxing? Regular Boxing? I guess we will soon find out. The "Super Samoan" hasn't fought in an MMA fight since December 2018, where he lost by decision. Last December, Hunt was in a boxing match that he also lost by decision. Mark Hunt is a fan favorite and an MMA legend, people will watch if he fights. Let's just hope it turns out to be a good outcome.

Combat sports legend Artem Lobov retires - Forget the 14-15-1 MMA record, the sport wouldn't be what it is today without the Russian-Irish legend Artem Lobov. Many see the "Russian Hammer" as the GOAT in MMA. Artem Lobov will be dearly missed.

These were just some of the talking points from the past week in MMA. Come back next Monday for "Monday MMA Musings" where there will be another set of The Fights, The Fuckery and The News!
